Patrick explains how zoos got started and were integrated into cities as part of the cultural scene.
More recently they were seen as concentration camps for animals and it is only over the last few years that they have taken their place as environmental parks.
Monaco zoo has unfortunately got a rather poor reputation for the conditions it offers.
The animals on show were mostly gifts to the royal family from foreign dignitaries. Others were from the circus. All were in poor condition although there were suggestions that things might be about to improve with the aid of Prince Albert.
Many famous names have become involved in the campaign and Patrick tells us more about their efforts.
